"Domestication of Radiata Pine"
Work has been proceeding for a number of years to produce a book of this title (abbreviated as "DORP"), with a push being currently mounted to complete it and make it widely available. The scope is very wide-ranging, in time, parts of the world, and technical aspects. However, the coverage is weighted in the direction of genetic improvement, in accordance with the technical backgrounds of the authors: Dr Rowland Burdon of Scion (New Zealand Forest Research Institute Ltd); William J Libby, Professor Emeritus of Forestry and Genetics, University of California, Berkeley; and Alan G Brown, formerly Chief of CSIRO Division of Forestry, Canberra.
The work is seen as being largely complementary to a recent book by Dr Donald J Mead "Sustainability of Pinus radiata Plantations", FAO Forestry Paper No. 170. It is complementary in three key respects: the much greater emphasis on the aspect of genetic improvement; primary chapter structure being based on historical periods rather than technical themes; and greater emphasis on the historical roles of institutions and some individuals.
Upon the signing of a Publishing Agreement with Springer all draft material has been removed from this site except the Preface and List of Contents. An Abstract has been added, with the intention of establishing a link from it to the book when it is published.
